12 Fighters Who Deserve Interim Belts

It was recently announced that the Featherweight Kingpin Max Holloway will be moving up in weight to face Dustin Poirer for the Interim Lightweight Title. The co-main event is also for another interim title fight, between Kelvin Gastelum, and Israel Adesanya.

This got us thinking; who else would we like to see get an interim title shot in 2019? Below is the answer!

12. Joanna Jedrzejczyk – 115lbs

After all, she is the queen of the straw-weights, with Rose out for what appears like forever; why not throw Joanna on the interim train?

11. Joanna Jedrzejczyk – 125lbs (W)

I would argue that she deserves to be the first Interim Champ Champ.

10. Ben Askren – 170lbs

As it has been clearly stated; Ben Askern won’t fight Tryon Woodley, so this would certainly be the next best thing (So long as he gets past Lawler).

9. Cain Velasquez – 265lbs

Same reason as above, just with Daniel Cormier. Also, Cain beat himself in his last fight, so it’s the only reasonable option. Francis didn’t win.

8. Cris Cyborg – 145lbs (W)

If she isn’t in the division, there is no division. Literally. There are no other fighters listed in the rankings. Also Nunes doesn’t seem too interested in a rematch.

7. Joseph Benavidez- 125lbs

With Henry Cejudo on a quest for Bella; he’ll be out for a very, very, very long time. So why not let Benavidez fight for an interim as he holds a win over the current champ, this would allow him to be recognised as the real Flyweight King, whilst Henry chases Bella.

6. Chris Weidman – 185lbs

Having lost 4 of his last 5 fights, it would only be rational for him to fight for the Interim title. However there is a fight booked for that already, so perhaps the Interim-Interim Belt?

5. Zabit Magomedsharipov – 145lbs

Zabit is a future star, so we obviously need to push him as hard as we can, as fast as we can; straight to an Interim-Interim title.

4. Germaine de Randamine – 135lbs (W)

Being the first ever Featherweight Champion has its perks, not least of which is deserving another crack at a title. This point is made twice as strong considering just how dominate she was at 145. (***sarcasm tone***)

3. Thiago Santos – 205lbs

Did you see those hammerfists in Prague? I mean sheeeesh.

2. Henry Cejudo – 135lbs

Having beat TJ Dillashaw, and with the future of Flyweight fighting looking uncertain, Henry needs to find some security. Nothing provides more security than an Interim Title.

1. Tony Ferguson – 155lbs

I haven’t actually done any research to back this up, but I do believe this would make Ferg the only two-time interim champion; how prestigious is that?
